Reimbursement from health insurance
If a psychological condition requiring treatment is present, your public health insurer will usually contribute to the cost of your psychotherapy. A brief medical confirmation is enough for this — your GP can issue it before your second session.
Subsidy per individual session (50 min) · as of January 2026
ÖGK€ 33,70
SVS€ 50,00
BVAEB€ 50,20
KFA€ 39,00
Privately insured? Depending on your plan, a private supplementary insurance may cover part of the therapy cost. It's best to check the exact amount and requirements directly with your insurer.
How reimbursement works
1Medical confirmation: Before your second session, get a brief confirmation, e.g. from your GP.
2First 10 sessions: No prior approval is needed for these. You simply submit the invoice, proof of payment and confirmation to your insurer afterwards.
3Continuing beyond that?: Your therapist will fill out the application for further sessions in good time. You then submit it to your health insurer.
For couples therapy or offerings like self-discovery work, there's usually no subsidy unless a corresponding diagnosis is present.
